How to Publish Your Book
You’ve decided to publish a book, but where do you start?
As an author, you have a wide variety of options on the spectrum from self-publishing to traditional publishing. And there is a lot of work ahead of you to get your book designed, edited, printed, marketed, sold, and distributed.
So how does an author decide on the best path to get their book published? Are there some books that are better off being self-published and others that should only be published traditionally?
Our webinar, How to Publish Your Book with Pete Nikolai, director of publishing services for HarperCollins Christian Publishing, answers those questions and more.
With more than 25 years of experience at HarperCollins Christian Publishing, Pete is a foremost expert in:
- traditional publishing
- self-publishing
- assisted self-publishing
- hybrid publishing and more
Pete helps you understand the differences in your publishing options, the benefits of choosing one option over another, and how to get started. He discusses some of the factors you’ll want to consider, such as:
- Speed to Market
- Control
- Priority
- Expertise
- Distribution
- Profit, and much more
If you don’t know where to start or you are unsure about the path you’re already taking, this webinar on How to Publish Your Book is for you. See it in our Resources section!
Hi Paul, Hi Pete, Thanks for putting this webinar on. It really helped me understand the process of getting my book published. I have one book that I would really like to see published through a traditional publisher and have two other books that that I can self publish. But right now I am a full time doctoral student and have a very limited income. What should I do in the mean time? Should I work on my platform by writing blogs? I am already on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook (privately) and LinkedIn. What else should I do to build my platform? Right now all my writing is involved with school.
Hi Kellie. Sounds like you’ve got your hands full for sure. Yes, continue to blog and develop your platform. Build an email list of people interested in your topic. It may be that this is not the season in your life to pursue publishing. We have a video in our Resources section on “Finding Time to Write” that you may find helpful. Also, join our Facebook Group where you can ask questions and get support and insight from other authors too. Thanks for your question.
FWIW, most agents I’ve talked to do not care about a book proposal for fiction. Non-Fiction, yes. Comes down to query, and your first five pages. The query has to be good enough to get them interested to read the pages.
Glad to be watching
How do I choose book size?
If you have already published a book with one publisher, and now what to revise the book and use another publisher, what problem will you encounter, if any. I had a good relationship with the first publisher, but am not satisfied with the pricing and the marketing. I am concerned about the copyright, use of the same cover, but with a slight change in title: eg, adding the word “Revisited.”
Any ideas and suggestions???
Thank you for your interesting video, full of useful information. My desire to get a book published is still my goal & will be using your publishing company.
Thank you for putting together such a comprehensive video outlining the book publishing process. So much professional and pertinent information. I appreciate the fact that you made this available for those of us unable to attend live. After a delay due to weather related power outages, I was able to sit down and take so many notes throughout the presentation.
Thanks to both Pete and Paul for gathering and presenting this all in one sitting. It was such a great summation of so many subjects you have introduced us to. Thanks for sharing your collective expertise!
Also, thank you for helping and encouraging each one of us to grow and develop in our writing. Your efforts have truly been a blessing.
